These items are prohibited from every skip, green or general:
- Asbestos — any bonded or friable asbestos needs licensed removal and special disposal.
- Liquids, paint and chemicals — wet paint, solvents, pool chemicals and cleaning products.
- Gas bottles — BBQ bottles and any pressurised cylinders (an explosion risk if crushed).
- Tyres — handled through dedicated tyre-recycling channels.
- Batteries — car batteries and household batteries.
- Liquid oils and fuels — engine oil, fuel and similar.
- Biological or medical waste.
Most electrical items (e-waste) are also best kept out of landfill where there’s a recycling option.
Where these items should go instead
Townsville City Council’s waste and recycling service runs transfer stations and drop-off points for hazardous and specialty materials — including chemicals, gas bottles, e-waste and tyres. Asbestos must be disposed of at an approved facility following the correct wrapping and handling rules. If you’re unsure about a specific item, it’s always worth a quick phone call before you load it.
What you can put in a skip
The good news is that almost everything from a normal clean-up is fine.
