Green Waste vs General Waste Skip Bins

Green waste vs general waste skip bins — the difference, what goes in each, and how to save money on your next Townsville skip hire.

Green waste vs general waste skip bins: at Green Ant Skips we offer both hire types — green waste and general waste — and picking the right one can save you real money. Here’s the difference in plain English.

Green waste skips

A green waste skip is for garden and yard material only. Because it’s pure greenery, it gets recycled into mulch rather than going to landfill — which keeps the price down and is better for the environment.

Goes in a green waste skip:

  • Lawn clippings and grass
  • Tree branches and prunings
  • Palm fronds
  • Leaves and garden trimmings
  • Small shrubs and weeds

Green waste skips come with a relaxed 4-day hire, so you can chip away at the garden over a long weekend.

General waste skips

A general waste skip is the workhorse — it takes mixed household and light commercial rubbish, so you’re not sorting as you go.

Goes in a general waste skip:

  • Household junk and furniture
  • Renovation and demolition waste
  • Timber, flooring and fittings
  • Cardboard and packaging
  • White goods and appliances

General waste skips come with a longer 7-day hire and a higher weight allowance to suit bigger jobs.

What can’t go in either

For everyone’s safety, some items can’t go in a skip bin: asbestos, liquids, paint, chemicals, gas bottles, tyres and batteries. If you’re not sure about something, give us a quick call before you book.

Green waste vs general waste skip bins: the money-saving tip

If your job is only garden waste, always choose a green waste skip — it’s noticeably cheaper than throwing greenery in a general waste bin. But the moment you mix in household rubbish, renovation debris or anything non-organic, you’ll need a general waste skip. Not sure how big to go? Our what size skip bin guide helps you choose.

Common questions

How long can I keep the skip bin at my property?

Our standard hire periods are tailored explicitly to the type of waste you are disposing of to keep your costs down. General mixed-waste skip bins come with a flexible 7-day hire period included in your flat rate, allowing you to clean out your garage or renovation site at your own pace. Dedicated green-waste skip bins feature a focused 4-day hire period, which is ideal for weekend garden clean-ups before organic vegetation begins to sit too long in the intense North Queensland tropical heat.

How do I pay for my skip bin?

Payment is required on delivery. Our drivers carry Square card facilities, so you can tap or swipe on the spot when your skip arrives. If it suits you better, we can also take payment over the phone — there is a range of options, but we usually take payment on delivery.

What suburbs across Townsville do you deliver skip bins to?

Green Ant Skips provides prompt, friendly delivery six days a week (Monday to Saturday) right across the entire Townsville region. This includes inner suburbs like North Ward, Hermit Park and South Townsville; high-density residential hubs like Kirwan, Aitkenvale, Annandale and Cranbrook; and the entire Northern Beaches growth corridor (Burdell, Bushland Beach, Deeragun, Jensen and Mount Low). We deliver from Ayr to Ingham, so we also route trucks out to extended regional districts including Kelso, Alligator Creek, Ingham, Ayr, Home Hill and Balgal Beach — extra charges apply on those outlying runs, so give us a call for a quick quote.

Can I put a mixture of garden green waste and general household junk in the same bin?

If you have a combination of green waste and general household junk, you must book a General Waste Skip Bin. Our highly discounted Green Waste rates are strictly reserved for 100% clean organic garden material (like tree branches, lawn clippings and palm fronds) because these loads are channelled directly into local organic sorting and recycling streams. Mixing general household plastics, furniture or building materials into a green skip invalidates the load and incurs standard general waste sorting fees.

What items are strictly prohibited from being placed in your skip bins?

To comply with Queensland environmental protection regulations and local landfill safety policies, we cannot accept hazardous materials. This includes asbestos, tyres, wet chemical paints, gas cylinders, liquid oils, batteries and biological waste. If you are unsure about a specific item on your property cleanup, please call us directly before loading it into your bin.
