What Size Skip Bin Do I Need?

What size skip bin do I need? A simple Townsville guide to choosing between a 2m³, 4m³ and 8m³ skip for your job — and saving money on the hire.

What size skip bin do I need? It’s the question we’re asked most, and getting it right is the single best way to save money on your skip bin hire. Too small and you’re paying for a second bin; too big and you’re paying for air. Here’s how to get it right the first time.

A quick rule of thumb

As a rough guide, one cubic metre is about one 6×4 box-trailer load. So a 4m³ skip holds roughly four trailer loads — without the back-and-forth to the tip.

What size skip bin do I need for my job?

  • 2m³ skip — Small clean-ups. A tidy garage, a single room declutter or a weekend in the garden. Our most affordable option.
  • 3m³ skip — The all-rounder. A bigger garden job or a small bathroom or laundry renovation.
  • 4m³ skip — Our most popular size. A full house declutter, a moving-out clean or a small renovation. If you’re unsure, this is usually the safe pick.
  • 6m³ skip — Big jobs. A larger renovation, deck removal or a serious storm clean-up.
  • 8m³ skip — The big one. Whole-property clear-outs and major build or demolition waste. Compare every option on the sizes & prices page.

Don’t forget about weight

Every skip has a weight allowance as well as a volume. Heavy materials like soil, sand, rubble and concrete add up fast — a bin can hit its weight limit long before it looks full. If your load is heavy, it’s often smarter to choose a slightly larger bin or call us for advice. Our friendly team explains the weight limits on delivery, and you’re always welcome to call ahead if you’re unsure.

Green waste vs general waste

If you’re only clearing garden material — clippings, branches, palm fronds — a dedicated green waste skip is cheaper and comes with a 4-day hire. Mixed household or renovation rubbish needs a general waste skip with a 7-day hire. Still weighing it up? Read our full green waste vs general waste guide.

Still not sure? See it in 3D

The easiest way to picture a skip is to see it to scale. On our skip bin sizes page you can spin a 3D bin, view the exact dimensions and compare it against a person for scale — then book the right size in a couple of clicks.

Common questions

How long can I keep the skip bin at my property?

Our standard hire periods are tailored explicitly to the type of waste you are disposing of to keep your costs down. General mixed-waste skip bins come with a flexible 7-day hire period included in your flat rate, allowing you to clean out your garage or renovation site at your own pace. Dedicated green-waste skip bins feature a focused 4-day hire period, which is ideal for weekend garden clean-ups before organic vegetation begins to sit too long in the intense North Queensland tropical heat.

How do I pay for my skip bin?

Payment is required on delivery. Our drivers carry Square card facilities, so you can tap or swipe on the spot when your skip arrives. If it suits you better, we can also take payment over the phone — there is a range of options, but we usually take payment on delivery.

What suburbs across Townsville do you deliver skip bins to?

Green Ant Skips provides prompt, friendly delivery six days a week (Monday to Saturday) right across the entire Townsville region. This includes inner suburbs like North Ward, Hermit Park and South Townsville; high-density residential hubs like Kirwan, Aitkenvale, Annandale and Cranbrook; and the entire Northern Beaches growth corridor (Burdell, Bushland Beach, Deeragun, Jensen and Mount Low). We deliver from Ayr to Ingham, so we also route trucks out to extended regional districts including Kelso, Alligator Creek, Ingham, Ayr, Home Hill and Balgal Beach — extra charges apply on those outlying runs, so give us a call for a quick quote.

Can I put a mixture of garden green waste and general household junk in the same bin?

If you have a combination of green waste and general household junk, you must book a General Waste Skip Bin. Our highly discounted Green Waste rates are strictly reserved for 100% clean organic garden material (like tree branches, lawn clippings and palm fronds) because these loads are channelled directly into local organic sorting and recycling streams. Mixing general household plastics, furniture or building materials into a green skip invalidates the load and incurs standard general waste sorting fees.

What items are strictly prohibited from being placed in your skip bins?

To comply with Queensland environmental protection regulations and local landfill safety policies, we cannot accept hazardous materials. This includes asbestos, tyres, wet chemical paints, gas cylinders, liquid oils, batteries and biological waste. If you are unsure about a specific item on your property cleanup, please call us directly before loading it into your bin.
